Eurodans.net

Conceived and coordinated by Sita Popat, Eurodans.net (2002) investigated the choreographic process aided by novel custom-built online tools. Students from ten European higher education institutions rehearsed in their respective countries and shared their rehearsal process through a custom-designed website with innovative features (which later became known as blogs). The project culminated in a final performance, choreographed by Wayne McGregor, at the ELIA (European League of Institutes of the Arts) conference in Dublin.

  • Stephan worked as researcher and rehearsal director for two Portuguese institutions, the Faculty of Human Kinetics (FMH) and the Escola Superior de Dança, both in Lisbon. In this role, he developed choreographic material collaboratively with the students, filmed rehearsals, edited the videos and created blog-like entries on the Eurodans.net website.

In Popat's previous project TRIAD (Transatlantic Real Time Interactive Dance Project, 2001), Stephan was rehearsal director for Portugal. 40 dance students from the UK, the US and Portugal took part in this online dance project led by Popat, discussing their choreographic processes and presenting their work in a final telematic performance. Popat documented both projects in her book Invisible Connections: Dance, Choreography and Internet Communities.
